History…
The estate, a former limestone quarry
“I had a crush on this vast space and I wanted to honor the work of these men who spent their lives extracting and transporting the building stones that make the charm of the houses of Burgundy”.
Tells us Hubert, the owner.
The name given to these four mansions represents this intention to restore the coat of arms of the quarrymen: the Colombier (opposite), the house of the Foreman, the house of the Master Carrier and the house of the Companions.
“I will be happy to tell you the story of this field and take a guided tour of the career, its history and my appreciation for these Men who make the word “Courage” an emblem.”
Chevroches
Located in the Haut Nivernais in the north of the Nièvre département, near Clamecy, Chevroches owes its originality to its geography. This picturesque village spreads out along the Canal du Nivernais, on the left bank of the Yonne. The north of the village consists of a rocky promontory on which the quarrymen’s houses were built, including the current Domaine des Carriers. The heights of Chevroches, known as the “Roches”, dominate the Yonne valley below.
It is one of the smallest communes in the Nièvre. It has 141 inhabitants and covers an area of 320 hectares. And yet! For many years, Chevroches lived to the rhythm of stone quarrying. Covering an area of 10 hectares, the quarries have left their mark on the history of the village. “Chevroches stone”, with its fine, tight grains, was much sought-after, and a text dating from 1626 already attests to the quarries’ activity. The limestone, which is of very high quality and resistant to frost, was used in the region to build houses, foundations, harbours and churches. Quarrying intensified in the 19th century with the opening of the canal. This led to an influx of quarry workers and stonemasons. The village grew and its population increased. In 1866, Chevroches had a population of 291. Quarrying activity declined sharply at the beginning of the 20th century and ceased completely after the Second World War.
Today, the newly restored quarrymen’s houses and the current landscape created by quarrying bear witness to the industrial era that left its mark on the village of Chevroches.

Dive into the heart of the vineyards
From hilly landscapes to immense plains, Burgundy’s vineyards will never cease to surprise you. In the Yonne, the vineyards dot the hills, while in the Nièvre, they stand on the slopes of the Loire.
6 lakes to discover in the Morvan
The Morvan Regional Natural Park is a territory of heritage and nature. The Morvan covers almost 300,000 hectares. This small mountain is different from the neighbouring regions.
Museums and archaeological sites
Why does visiting, learning and having fun make sense in Burgundy? Quite simply because our region has had a remarkable history, which still shapes our culture, traditions and know-how today.
